Assignment#2

Every advertisement uses Rhetoric methods (ethos, pathos and logos) to make people interested in it. For this assignment I will analyze the advertisement from Gatorade (One of the large power energy drink companies). They always invite the biggest superstar in any kind of sport. For example, in this advertisement, they invited Michael Jordan to endorse their drink. From this example we can know that they use logos and ethos to make people connect thinking that all professional basketball players might drink Gatorade and show that their energy drink is very effective. They also used the influence of Michael Jordan to make their brand well-known. Most of their customers are people who play any kind of sport, which is why they always invite superstars from sports like Michael Jordan and Usain Bolt and they always sponsor a lot of sports competitions.

They put “WORKS 30% FASTER THAN WATER” beside Michael Jordan, as like he is talking this sentence to the customers. Because of ethos methods, people might believe that this energy drink works 30% faster than water. They compare water with their drink because we drink water every day and we can’t service without water especially people who play sports they need more water than normal people. This example is only a little part of Gatorade’s advertisement. They always sign new famous superstars from sports to endorse their brand to make them always relative with professional sports.

Questions:

  • If Writing is based on trends and times, why is texting the only reason why grammar and literacy is getting worse? There could be other reasons, like teaching and education, may be the reason.
  • Gamification, or more broadly digital technology, seems to make education better but why isn’t more utilized.
  • What if all the technology ruins children’s perceptions and/or attention spans?
  • Does the new usage of technology create a greater divide between generations?

When searching up for the rhetorical assignment, I already had in mind what source to use for it. That source was the promotional material for the St Jude Children Hospital. This was mainly because I remember seeing so much promos of it during when I watched a lot of tv in the past. They would well show the kids in the promo explaining their condition and what they went through. This was a perfect example of pathos because it uses mainly emotions of people since no one would want to see children in pain.

On April 9th, 2019, I had emailed a girl I had never met before and will be spending 4 weeks under the same roof. This was part of the German-American Exchange Program that I had signed up for 6 months prior. I was filled with dread as sending the email meant that there was no backing out, or else I would disappoint everyone. I was nervous that I would be an outcast as I had no friends going on this trip and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to make any friends due to my social anxiety. I had gone through forums, websites and even asked my therapist on how I was going to deal with my time there but nothing had really eased my nerves.

Fastfoward to August 15th and I was now boarding my plane. After 4 months of constant messages between me and my partner, Emily, I would be finally meeting her in person. To say nervous was an understatement. I was nauseous, shaking, dropping things, and stuttering constantly when speaking to others. After my total 9 hours in the air, with one layover in Iceland, I had finally met Emily in person. As soon as I saw her, I felt all my worries wash away as I had realized that while I might not have known the other exchange students or partners, I had known her. I was not going to be completely alone because I had already made a friend while I was counting down the days and stressing over every small thing about my trip.

This, however, was not the end of my worries as on the very first day, I had overslept and woke up at 2pm. I felt so embarrassed as the weeks prior to coming to Germany, I had tried to fix my sleeping habit. We barely made it to the museums that she and her family had wanted to take us to and I was so worried that I had just destroyed the plans that she had made. This made me spiral into a whole other set of issues I felt was going to ruin my time in Germany.
