Assignment #2

Cover Letter

For this assignment, we are asked to identify and analyze rhetorical strategies that we had seen before. For this assignment, my audience will be my professor and my classmate. The reason for writing this assignment is to break down the advertisements to see and understand their components and analyze what makes them persuasive and therefore make my audience understand the strategies more. Hence, in this assignment, I used a lot of simple terms and define the components of rhetorical strategies.

One of the rhetoric that I have seen is an advertisement about bubble tea. Let’s explain what bubble tea is in case somebody doesn’t know, bubble tea can be considered a drink mixed with milk, sugar, and tea is a famous drink in China. And the ad about bubble tea is on the Chinese version of TikTok called “douyin”, as known, TikTok is a short video app, so this ad must have a very attractive headline or slogan and content that makes people have the patience to watch the ad and will remember it. So this sponsored video is basically a drama that talks about the autumn season coming, a girl is walking on the road, rubbing her hands because she was freezing, and suddenly her boyfriend comes out from her back, holding her hand, and gives her as warm bubble tea to warm her hand, the video at this time is about to end, at the last scene, a slogan comes out. Saying “ the first cup of bubble tea in the fall”. And after 12 hrs, this ad went on fire and it became very trending on TikTok, during that time period, basically, in every three videos, one video is about bubble tea. But to be honest, I actually couldn’t get the point of it because I realized it was an advertisement from those bubble tea facilities. They are combining bubble tea with the love of a couple, just the diamond strategy. The exigence of this case is your girlfriend is freezing. The audience then will be those couples because the girls want the boys to buy them bubble tea to show how much he loves them. The constraint is just the limiting of time since it was posted on TikTok, and the reason why they posted it here is also to facilitate the audience since usually, young people will care about this stuff and TikTok was mostly for young people that are using.

To: Professor Evans, and my dear classmates

During writing this assignment, I know I am writing this for everyone in the class to see my experience. So I need to make sure my tone and my format and language are not too formal but not too casual, I have to control in a sense of storytelling. So the format of my writing will be presented as a story with my thoughts included and I also attached some pictures for people to have an idea of what I am really talking about instead of just lines of sentences.

As I am writing my assignment, I am actually kind of lost and not really happy with what I wrote because it was messed up, the lacking of vocabulary had cause me to fail in expressing my feeling and thoughts about what I saw and experienced. Also, the structure of this assignment is not assigned well and it might cause the readers to get lost in my point and idea. Also, I am always repeating the same idea over and over again in my writing, I guess it was a bad habit that I always had. It’s existence just to fill out the word requirements lol. But that’s something I am working to get it out. So from this assignment, I realized how important it is to start my writing as an outline to list what I should write in each paragraph and then start writing. I think it will make my idea clearer and try to use different vocabulary next time in my description.

I can see that my writing style and practices really change based on different rhetorical situations since I know what am I presenting and the audiences that I need to persuade to show my writing in the way that fits the situation best.

After finishing the first assignment, which is the WLNN assignment. I realized how my experience in childhood had impacted the way I write, and read my mindset of living, and even my personality. All of these just come from a book series that I love to read when I was little, this was absolutely crazy when you are thinking it. So I am very appreciative of doing this assignment to find out the origin of my writing style.

My question after reading the article “Bad Ideas About Writing” is if the article is saying grammar should not be as strict as some of the teachers are suggesting. Then what is the range of “proper grammar”, in other words, how should people know they are writing in proper grammar when they are writing?

The effects of books

Posted by Shaoqin Li (He/him) on

we are living in a society that contains words and writing. People wrote down their experiences and knowledge in a book and pass it to the next generations to develop further. Therefore, reading and writing is a mandatory skill that we must obtain since it is the way to obtain knowledge. Unfortunately, I hated and suck at reading and writing since I was a kid. I could literally fall asleep when I read the Chinese book for more than five minutes because I could not understand what is the point of reading those “nonsense” kinds of stuff and it was hard for me to comprehend and enjoy the beauty of those writings. Hence my Chinese grade was always at the bottom of the class ranking. I thought I will stay in this position for my life until that day I met the book that would change my mindset to readings on the book affair. The book was called “Charlie IX”, a large adventure Chinese novel for children, it is pretty similar to the other book that was also very popular in our class at that time, called “A Case for You and the Tiger-Team”.

The 28th book in this series

But at that time, I was captivated by Charlie IX because we all know that children always have those imaginations about adventures. This book satisfied all my imagination because of its exciting and undulating storyline, exciting and slightly thrilling subject matter, imaginative writing, and exquisite illustrations. These elements captivated me。 I can still remember the first time I saw this book and was attracted by its exquisite cover and the abstract. The mood that was expressed by the cover and the abstract gave me a sense of mystery and the desire to open it to see what was inside the book.

After finishing reading the first chapter, I was totally shocked and addicted to this book. its descriptions and illustrations literally brought me into the book.

The illustration in the book

Furthermore, in which I think it is the key to this book is the puzzles in the book, there are different puzzles in each chapter, and the readers need to use the scanner provided by the book to solve each puzzle in order to move on next storyline. This creates interactions between readers and the book and I have to be focused on the details of the plot in order to solve the puzzles. Because I was so focused, I rarely spend my free time finishing this book and wanted to borrow other books in this series instead of playing games. During that year, I spend all my time finishing the entire series as the sixth member of the squad, experiencing different kinds of adventures, and getting familiar with each character in the book. And I benefited from the book so much besides having so much fun, first of all, my reading and writing skills were increasing at an incredible speed because I was able to understand the sentences in the Chinese book from all those practices and was capable to cite beautiful sentences in Charlie IX in my writing. But what was important was that I was finally interested in reading other readings. Also, my logic of thinking and the ability to capture details on different things are the results of solving these puzzles when I was little. Last, my personality was changed by the book, now I am in love with traveling, experiencing different views, and creating my own Charlie IX.

Although the book now seemed to be a little silly when I bought a book from the series a couple of days ago. But without a doubt, the books gave me a wonderful childhood and their impact on me was unerasable.

After reading “Backpacks vs. Briefcases: Steps Towards Rhetorical Analysis” by Laura Bollin Carroll, I find out there is actually a lot of rhetoric that is in our daily life and we are using rhetorical analysis all the time without knowing it.
